6 criteria of newsworthiness

1.       Identify, define, and give an example of the 6 criteria of newsworthiness.
Criteria 1: Unusualness
Definition: The different, the unusual, the out-of-the ordinary; unusual is more often found in bad news.
Example: Car accident, death, illness, missing person

Criteria 2: Significance
Definition: Important events, ones that affect many people.
Example: taxes, elections, war, scientific discoveries, the economy

Criteria 3: Timeliness
Definition: News that is happening right now, not in the past.
Example: A flood that is happening right now, not after it has dried out.

Criteria 4: Proximity
Definition: In your area
Example: the new state tax law, the proposed regional highway, the asbestos problem in the local school

Criteria 5: Prominence
Definition: Well-known people, buildings or places
Example: If a movie star is arrested

Criteria 6: Human interest
Definition: Stories about ordinary people e or animals, humorous or dramatic stories, heartwarming or heart-wrenching stories; and emotional and personal appeal that draws our attention; often good stories
Example: a minister who runs a drop-in center for troubled teenagers, a veterinarian who specializes in elephants, a sand castle competition
